The project required the demolition of the existing bus station in phases to allow continuous use – the construction of a new ‘flagship’ bus station to signal the quality standards to be achieved through the L.C.C bus portfolio into the future.
The new station included 18 bus stands, a fully enclosed passenger concourse with seating and public toilets, retail units, tourist information, café and driver/operator administration offices.
The station is designed as an internal ‘street’ as a main thoroughfare in this edge of town location. The strong curving form, which responds to the contours of the site along with the striking colours chosen for the building fabric provides a powerful image from all aspects.
The building, highly transparent from all areas, provides clarity of use imagery with a combination of more traditional materials – predominately brick to the accommodation pods and contemporary materials to the main concourse area.
