Strzala Architects were appointed by East Coast Main Line to design, co-ordinate and deliver a complex programme of refurbishment and renewals for this busy station.
The brief called for improvements to front of house areas, staff areas, retails areas, external parking and approach encompassed by an overall vision, which would improve passengers’ perception of the station.
The approach taken was to create a dramatic new entrance and concourse area allowing natural light to flood the space, which in turn would make for a more welcoming environment with greater clarity of use and ease of pedestrian flow.
The structurally glazed feature ‘eye’ roof light forms the centrepiece of the scheme.
Additional retail opportunities and inclusion of Automatic Ticketing Gates realised the commercial aspects of the brief and new customer information areas including screens and central ticket desk, dramatically improved the usability of the station for passengers.
