Accrington, Lancashire

Strzala Architects were appointed to design a new station building at Accrington with the brief calling for a building which would show the local council's commitment to sustainability and eco-freindly building.

Through careful and thoughtful design with the team of consultants the finished building achieved a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating through its use of active sustainable technologies such as roof mounted solar panels and rainwater harvesting, to the choice of materials and specification of fittings such as low energy LED lighting, reclaimed local stone and a majority timber frame structure from sustainable sources.

The building also contains a unique offering of a classroom in the basement area where pupils of local schools can attend lessons in sustainable building, using the station itself as a real-world example.

Strzala Architects involvement extended to an on-site presence throughout the entire build to provide a quality control role and ensure that the construction was carried out to achieve the highest levels of sustainability which the client expected.
