Strzala Architects were appointed to provide designs for improvements at 5 stations for National Express as part of the National Station Improvements Programme. The scope of works ranged from comprehensive refurbishment of existing stations to new build stations including the development of the modular station type. Projects were undertaken at Shoeburyness, Waltham Cross, Brentwood, Marks Tey and Chafford Hundred.

The station at Waltham Cross was a new build modular station building including ticket office, waiting area and cycle parking. New lift towers were constructed to provide access to the existing bridge as part of Network Rail Access for All.
