Sandhills Station

Kirkdale, Liverpool

A new replacement station procured by Network Rail for MerseyTravel, designed by SBS Architects and completed in January 2009.

The scheme involved the replacement of the existing station building with a new facility located at platform level. A new bus apron was created at the road level with
taxi drop-off facilities and disabled parking spaces. New and modified pedestrian access are provided from the street level via a subway to platform level including fully compliant disabled ramps and a passenger lift.
Facilities at platform level include ticket office, booking hall, train operator facilities, disabled toilet and glazed enclosed waiting rooms all within a canopied structure. Protection from the weather in this exposed location is a priority.

The form of the buildings at platform level are elevated to enhance the presence of the station as a transport gateway signalling this important node. Materials have been chosen for their crisp appearance, resilient properties and continued MerseyTravel palette.
