The proposal required the demolition of the existing rail station and construction of a new contemporary station building. Works included the creation of a new station building to accommodate the necessary facilities including ticketing, public facilities, staff and managerial spaces plus a public cafe/retail space at mezzanine level. A second platform structure provides additional shelter and is linked to the main building via a new bridge, replacing a dark subway.

The unique and dramatic form of the building signals a completely new approach for rail transport in St. Helens, providing an image comparable with the best in contemporary public transport, and will aid the perception of the station being a part of the town centre.

The internal spaces are served from the central pedestrian route, defined by two copper clad ‘fin’ walls, leading through to the platform from which all public areas can be viewed. A comfortable fully glazed waiting area is provided giving access to the ticket office and public toilet facilities. Further non-public facilities are provided for the train operator.

The scheme is a contemporary addition to the urban fabric of St. Helens which signals the entrance to the town centre with an image which speaks clearly of the future.
