Warrington West Station

Warrington, Cheshire

Strzala Architects were appointed by Warrington Borough Council to provide a full architectural service for the design of a new railway station at Chapelford Urban Village, Warrington, where no station existed previously. Following a complex feasibility study which led to selection of the chosen site we developed design concepts for the station building and footbridge in conjunction with a wider design team of engineers, to tie in with the new platforms and related infrastructure.

The design is reflective of the history of the site as a former American airbase during the second world war. Prior to the construction of the new housing development the area was occupied by several old landing strips and aircraft hangars.

The hangar-like form of the station building is exploded in parts to allow natural light into the building where needed, creating a dynamic structure reflective of the spaces which it shelters.
